Pre-eminent designer duo Shyamal and Bhumika launch their much-awaited Summer Couture Collection- Memoirs of a Maharani, designed for the modern day woman as well as their millennial muse. The collection recreates the splendour of ancient India transporting you to an era of larger than life grandeur, regal traditions and extravagant lifestyles while also reflecting the love Shyamal and Bhumika have for the rich heritage and culture India and its exceptional artisanal craftsmanship.
The collection has a distinct flavour inspired by the royal courts of the princely states of India in the 17th century where the courtiers took active interest in the fabrication of their clothes and spent time supervising their clothes to create works of art for their new collection.
While designing it was history that inspired Shyamal & Bhumika, keeping in mind the relevance of their crafts complementing today’s age and time and bringing forth the amalgamation of the timeless and the ‘new’. Their inspiration is the sartorial splendour of the 17th century royal courts and the couturier duo have explored museums, rare private collections, antique markets and books on the royal courts to research the cuts, detailing and the surface ornamentation of their garments.
Festive Indian clothing is incomplete without beautiful hand embroideries, hand weaving and surface textures. This couture line focusses on patchwork, sequinning, a variety of rare embroideries like marodi work, zardosi work, chainstitch from the desert areas of Kutch and Rajasthan as well as beautiful floral vines embroidered in metal thread along the necklines and placement embroidery. There is use of Arabesque konias, buttas, crescents and dense embroidery on sheer fabrics to keep the season in mind. The collection comprises of decadent gold zardozi, zardosi borders, painterly motifs, glittering gold embellishments, French knots, age old peeta embroideries on vintage European tones. Royalty inspired jackets with dramatic sleeves and necklines, exquisite angrakhas, panelled lehengas and bias skirts are paired with sensuous cholis. Motifs used in the collection have been inspired from stone carvings, floral architecture in the royal courts, button roses, haveli panel borders, floral bouquets, cutwork edges and wild foliage. A beautiful colour palette stands out in the collection from foliage green, vintage orchid, carmine, blush pink, almond ivory to sindoor red and midnight blue. The couturiers have also played with contrasting colour combinations using black velvets with brightly coloured Indian brocades, dull beige with dusky peach, mustard with scarlet, bright purple with deep green, icy grey with midnight blue.
