Size Inclusive Designer Options Available For Brides-To-Be!

Making a choice between your favourite food items and a beautiful dress can be hard, so why not get the best of both worlds. We live in a world where being skinny is considered to be perfect and one of the areas of our life that is most affected by this taboo is the phase when one is about to get married.

Brides to be are often recommended to go on slimming diets that are highly short-lived as it involves one eating really tiny portions of food or set unrealistic targets with fad diets like keto which does more harm to your overall physical and mental health than consuming a regular home-cooked meal. There are multiple side effects of the same and the weight loss comes back as soon as you feel that now is the time to enjoy that doughnut you have been craving for so long.

The question here is not about what diet would be better for you but it is to challenge such social stigmas that brides should look a certain way and if they do not have a slim waist and a toned physique then they are seen and treated differently. Beauty comes in all shapes and sizes and it’s time to make a note of this.

In a recent article by Her Circle which is a platform for the women of India and highlights the social issues surrounding them, this fact was beautifully highlighted that it is very difficult for a female whose size is more than medium to find a good wedding lehenga or gown and it is almost like the game of treasure hunt. The process of finding an outfit that looks stunning and suits is already a task on top of which if she is the plus size it takes extra effort as if it were a crime to be curvy. Apart from this hard work, it is mentally taxing for any person to feel helpless and underconfident about themselves simply because of the standards set by society of what is pretty supposed to look like. The wedding day and process should be fun-filled and exciting and it shouldn’t give a feeling of despair and anxiety.

The plus-size market in India is estimated to be approximately 12% of the overall fashion segment but the wedding industry, having a worth of around $50 billion, is not able to keep up with the basic needs of a person. It is very important for designers and social media platforms to promote dresses for every size and spread awareness that there is nothing wrong with being chubby. There is a need for an adequate amount of representation of plus-size models as well.

In the recent Paris Haute couture, Valentino did a remarkable job of having plus-size models to flaunt some of the pieces which is a great initiative and should be taken as an inspiration by all.

There are some Indian brands like Kulwinder Nagra, Sabyasachi, Abhinav Mishra, Papa Don’t Preach By Shubhika, Payal Keyal and Plumtin Motif that are taking a step towards creating an inclusive space but we have a long way to go when it comes to the ground reality.

Self-love is crucial and it’s time to break the stereotypes and normalise having curves. Curvy women have feelings too! Size should never come in the way of someone’s happiness. All brides should be able to look and feel beautiful not only from the inside but also from the outside.
