This arranged-turned-love story is about Sonam Jain and Himanshu Makharia. Himanshu was born and brought up in Hong Kong, living and working in Washington, DC; as a result, he sparingly visited India. Sonam was our typical Chandigarh girl living with her parents after completing her Undergraduate from the United Kingdom. Therefore, the chances of them crossing paths were very slim.
Enter Sonam’s sister, Tanya Jain, who lived in HK and initiated the proposal to Himanshu’s parents, who at the time had not even begun to look for a girl. However, they were impressed by Sonam’s pictures (who at the time was vacationing in Iceland and praying to the Northern Lights about some direction in life). The day Himanshu was scheduled to fly back to the US, his parents convinced him that he had to meet Tanya and her husband Kapil. After much deliberation, Himanshu gave in and met them, which culminated in phone numbers being exchanged. Now that cupid had got to work, all that was left was for Sonam & Himanshu to meet and like each other. He messaged her the day he got back, on New Year’s Eve 2020, and thus began the story of #SonamGotHim.
The two met in London a couple of months later, and as the saying goes, “sometimes the people whom we’ve known for only a short amount of time have a bigger impact on us than those we’ve known forever.” An enthralling week ensued, where the couple began planning future visits to see each other. However, a month later, COVID-19 hit the globe. Our lovebirds resorted to hours on the phone every day. They would go on virtual dates, cook on camera for each other, go on Netflix parties, and did just about anything to stay connected.
Seven long months later in September, Sonam finally traveled to the US, and it was everything they had wished for. They had a magical time catching up on all the missed date nights, taking endless walks, and getting a sense of normalcy in an otherwise abnormal year. Sonam felt like she was living in a Disney movie. On 8th October 2020, he took her on their most important date to the Georgetown Waterfront in Washington, where he got down on his knee and professed his love to her, asking her to marry him amidst a golden sunset backdrop. She had absolutely no idea
that he had been planning this for weeks, where he chose the perfect spot, the perfect time, and a perfect photographer to capture the surprise. With glistening eyes and wide smiles, she said Yes as he slid the ring on her finger and officially proposed to her.
Before Sonam had found her groom, she had already found her perfect wedding venue! Sonam was born in Rajasthan, and while she had never lived there, she always had a soft spot for Rajasthani art and culture. Combining that with her love for nature and mountains; it was a delicious cocktail for the perfect wedding venue. Resting at the foothills of the Himalayas, with its intricately designed Rajasthani architecture, she knew The Oberoi Sukhvilas Resort & Spa in New Chandigarh would give her the perfect Rajasthani princess feel as she walked towards the mandap. It was her easiest decision amongst all the decisions required when planning a wedding. Before she had found her groom, she had already found her perfect wedding venue! A note from Sonam to all her fellow brides!
My only advice would be- accept the fact that you will turn into a Bridezilla, breathing fire through your nose and bursting into tears because the makeup is taking too long. This is coming from a person who has never stressed over anything in her life. But when you walk down that aisle and see your other half look at you like you are the most beautiful thing that’s ever existed, you will forget about the monster that you have become and look forward to spending your life together.
