After a year he joined as the fifth assistant for the famous make-up artiste, Jayanti Shevale.     Jaywant Thakrey started his career in 1980, at the tender age of 15 by assisting the well-known make-up artiste of Marathi Theatre, Babulnath Kuterkar. After a year he joined as the fifth assistant for the famous make-up artiste, Jayanti Shevale. Between the year 1980 and 1985, he associated himself with the prestigious Rajshri Productions and worked extensively on films like Raksha Bandhan, Sun Meri Laila, Saransh, and Abodh. It was during this period that Jaywant had the fortune of meeting make-up maestro Sarosh Modi, who took him on as an assistant. This period was by far the most productive phase of Jaywant's career as he learnt a lot under Sarosh Modi's guidance. Thakrey worked with Modi on the famous Television show, Buniyaad which continued on Indian television for over 1\2 years. Impressed by Jaywant's work, Ramesh Sippy hired him for two of his subsequent feature films, Zameen and Bhrashtachaar.
